Manitoba's agricultural industry is looking to take advantage of pulses like chickpeas, fava beans, and lentils.
The United Nations declared earlier this week that 2016 is the International Year of Pulses, citing them as a great source of plant-based protein.
Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn says extra demand for pulses could create a new cash crop for Manitoban farmers.
"I think pulse crops is kind of the new 'appetite' if I can use the terminology...for producers to consider growing and providing another source of revenue besides the traditional crops that are grown."
Kostyshyn says when the legislature resumes on February 24, he hopes to use much of that time collaborating with the province's agricultural producers.

The province's leaders will meet for 12 sessions through March 15 before the election cycle begins.
