Last night, Dauphin Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire in an apartment on Macleod Avenue East.
Upon arrival, firefighters were informed the fire was located in the bathroom of an apartment on the 3rd floor. Crews were immediately sent into the apartment to begin extinguishing and evacuate all apartments on the 3rd floor while members of the RCMP assisted with the evacuation of the remainder of the complex.
All tenants were able to safely exit the apartment complex. The tenants of the suite involved in the fire were treated by EMS for smoke inhalation while another tenant was treated for a hand injury, caused during his attempts to help extinguish the fire prior to the FD arrival.
The firefighters were able to contain the fire to two of the suites as the fire had spread between an adjoined wall. After ensuring the fire was extinguished, crews assisted with water removal to prevent further damage to the apartments located on the 2 lower floors.
The majority of the tenants were allowed back into their apartments that were unaffected by the fire, smoke, and water. Those that were directly affected were supplied with alternative accommodations by the owners of the apartment complex.
The cause of the fire is accidental in nature due to carelessly discarded smoking materials and there are no estimates on damages at this time.
