Unionized workers at Safeway and FreshCo in Manitoba have voted 98% in favor of a strike mandate. The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, has been negotiating a new contract with Sobeys Capital Inc. since late 2021.
The strike mandate does not mean that workers will be going on strike right away, but if the final offer is rejected closer to the current contract expires, a strike would likely follow.
The current contract ends March 19, and the two sides are expected to continue talks tomorrow. UFCW represents around 2000 workers in Dauphin, Neepawa, Brandon, Thompson, and Winnipeg.
