The Dauphin and District Handivan has been around for 40 years.
Going stronger than ever, they now have four vans equipped with ramps and one ambulatory-style van. For a very small fee, drivers pick up those with mobility issues and disabilities to get done everyday things.
From grocery shopping to going to the mall and everything in between, the Dauphin & District Handivan has served Dauphin and the area for four decades.
Marge Beyette is the president and board chair.
"Looking back at the beginning, it's inspiring to see how far we have come," said Beyette. "We started with one driver and one vehicle. Now, we've grown into a trusted, community-supported service that continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients every day. We continue to grow as an organization, and we are evolving to meet the challenges we face."
To ring in 40 years, Marge and the wonderful crew at Dauphin and District Handivan will host a 40th Anniversary celebration on Saturday at the Royal Canadian Legion club room.
There will be a short program at 2:00 p.m., and community members are invited to join for cake and coffee.
Beyette believes it's very important to continue with this critical service. Over the last four decades, Beyette has been on hand to witness many of these changes.
"The sizing of the wheelchairs, the units that we've had to purchase to accommodate the different wheelchairs," ended Beyette. "The costs involved. Fuel, repairs, and the price of vehicles have all gone up. Those are the biggest changes."
The Dauphin and District Handivan runs Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It's $10 per stop, and they can also accommodate trips out of Dauphin for a fee. If you require their services, call 204-638-8444.
