The public is encouraged to provide feedback on revisions recently made by the National Farm Animal Care Council to the Code of Practice for Beef Producers.
Some of those revisions include increased requirements for pain control during procedures, monitoring cattle more during heat waves and high humidity, new material surrounding mud and moisture, non-ambulatory cattle, and expanded material on weaning.
Melissa Atchison, with Manitoba Beef Producers, says it's critical for livestock producers, in particular, to provide their feedback to the changes.
"This is an opportunity to provide feedback on whether the standards are workable on your operation, how the Code applies across different production systems, and any areas that need clarification or adjustment. Producers can then also provide input on what they like in the Code, such as practices that are very justifiable, but may be difficult to explain to the public."

June 13th is the deadline to provide feedback, with the updated Code of Practice for Beef Producers expected to be finalized by the second quarter of 2027.
