Since 2017, there have been 68 off-road vehicle fatalities in Manitoba.
As of late last month, there were already five in 2026. Off-road vehicles include dirt bikes, all-terrain, and utility vehicles. While they're fun to ride, the RCMP says safety should always be everyone's priority.
"Tell someone where you're going," said Roussel. "Always travel in groups of two or more. Always wear your seatbelt, if your machine is equipped with one. Don't drink and drive."
If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs and get caught, the penalties are the same as if you were driving a vehicle. Heavy fines and possible suspensions can follow. No person under the age of 14 is allowed to operate an ORV unless supervised and accompanied by an adult.
You are not allowed to travel on or through private property, including farmland and gravel pits. Every off-road vehicle must be equipped with a noise muffler in good working order. No person should be operating an off-road vehicle without a helmet – and it must be securely fastened.
If your off-road vehicle is equipped with a spot for the passenger, you are welcome to travel with one.
"If your machine is not factory equipped with a second seat, you are not allowed to have a second rider on the machine," ended Roussel.
The RCMP has increased their presence on the trails this summer. They wish everyone a safe and happy summer on the trails.
