The 11th Avenue Hall in Dauphin is set to host an informative event on Monday.
From 10:00 to 4:00, there will be an older adults police academy. It's for those aged 18 and older. It focuses on skills and safety principles for older adults, and empowers participants with key information.
Lacey Clarkson is a corporal with the RCMP Community Engagement Services.
"We provide participants with information on a variety of topics," said Clarkson. "They include elder abuse, medication safety, fraud and scams, fire safety, wills, and power of attorney. We're coming to the table with a ton of information for those who come."
Dauphin's Fire Chief, Cam Abrey, is among those who will speak. Joe Coffey and Jack Koreliuk of Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Services will also speak. Clarkson says this is a key meeting and she welcomes the entire community to join.
It's free and there will be door prizes with a light lunch.
"We just held one in Winnipegosis on Friday and had plenty of positive feedback," ended Clarkson. "There was a ton of great information. In particular, especially frauds and scams piece because many people are dealing with that right now."

The Manitoba government announced during the Throne Speech on Tuesday that it’s building an overpass at an intersection near Carberry, which was the site of a crash that killed 17 people in 2023.
The incident, which involved a minibus carrying seniors from Dauphin on a casino trip and a semi-trailer, occurred at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 5 that June.
Premier Wab Kinew and Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor announced on Thursday that after consultations, a technical analysis and a safety review, construction on an overpass will begin in 2027.
An original plan for an R-CUT - or restricted crossing U-Turn - at that intersection was heavily criticized by local residents and eventually scrapped by the province.
When asked by CKDM News Now about the Throne Speech earlier this week, Dauphin mayor Dave Bosiak said he was happy to see the province listen to the concerns of the residents of Carberry.
"And even though based on consultants, and gathering information that an R_CUT was apparently just as safe. But, because the local residents in the community spoke out and said they did not prefer that option, and that they preferred an overpass, the province listened,."
Construction of the overpass is expected to take two-and-a-half years to complete.

A couple in Garland, north of Dauphin, are very grateful to Manitoba Ag Minister and Dauphin M.L.A. Ron Kostyshyn.
The couple reached out to Kostyshyn looking for help after recent roadwork to Highway 10 left the driveway to their residence inaccessible.
Kostyshyn was made aware of the problem, crews came out and fixed the roadway and driveway area, and the couple is very happy.

It is a great start to the Holiday Smile Cookie campaign through Tim Horton's in Dauphin.
Through the first three days, the Dauphin restaurant is number one for sales in Manitoba, and number 8 in all of Canada. with over $10,000 in sales so far.
Local proceeds from this edition of Smile Cookies supports the Dauphin Food Bank, and Tim Horton's Camp Foundation.

From November 24 to 28, you'll get the chance to learn the ins and outs of what is going on within the Gilbert Plains Municipality.
Council has declared November 23 to 29 as Municipal Government Awareness Week, and throughout the week, officials will host different events to mark the week.
Have you ever wondered where your water comes from? On November 24, you can join in on a tour of the G3 Water Plant, says CAO Courtney Roehl.
"Our water operators will be up there to explain how our entire system works," said Roehl. "Where the water comes from, how it gets dispersed throughout our municipality, Grandview, and the RM of Dauphin."

On November 25, it's time for a hearty pancake and sausage breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the Public Works Shop.
"The shop will be open so you can take a look around at it and the equipment," continued Roehl. "You can talk to the guys and see what they do around the municipality."
On Thursday, the festivities continue with "Stop, Drop, & Roll". This is where you can meet the heroes that serve and protect the community from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fire Department.
"We'll have some of our local firefighters showing their equipment," offered Roehl. "We just got a new rescue truck. You can try on some equipment and learn what our department does."
On Friday, you can have Coffee With Council at the Council Chambers from 2:30 to 3:30.
"It's allowing our ratepayers and citizens to come talk to council, have a cup of coffee, and ask any questions they have," commented Roehl.
You're invited to join the municipality for these fun and informative days throughout the week.
"Yeah, it's very exciting to be able to educate more of our citizens and ratepayers on exactly what municipal government is and what we're responsible for," she ended.
That's Municipal Government Awareness Week, November 23 to 29, and the Gilbert Plains Municipality is looking forward to celebrating.

If you're looking to serve on council in Swan River, it's soon time to get those papers ready.
Between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30 from November 26 to December 2, nominations will be accepted at 439 Main Street in Swan River. No nominations will be accepted after December 2.
All nominations should be made in writing and must be signed by at least twenty-five voters. The nomination paper must include the candidate's qualifications. To get a nomination paper, go to the Town Office at 439 Main Street.

Friday is a professional development day, which means kids won't be heading to school.
However, they can head to the Dauphin Public Library. They're excited to host International Game Day.
Melinda VanBuekenhout is the supervisor at the library.
"We're going to play board games. Our classics, like Yahtzee and Clue," said VanBuekenhout. "There's going to be Chess battles. So if you like Chess, this will be great. We'll whip out the card games, too. It will be a fun way to spend a couple of hours."
While the event is geared toward school-age students, don't be afraid to head down for some fun and games if you've graduated.
"Anyone who wants to come, really," ended VanBuekenhout. "We aimed it at the kids. But if there are adults off that day, we can find games for them as well."
It'll take place from 1:30 to 3:00. It's set to be an afternoon full of laughter, challenges, and friendly competition.

The Dauphin RCMP are looking for Matthew Lavallee.
The 40-year-old is wanted on numerous charges. They include kidnapping, aggravated assault, and forcible confinement. These incidents happened over the past few months.
He's described as 6'0" and approximately 250 pounds. He could be in Dauphin, Brandon, or Winnipeg.

Winter is coming.
There's no way to escape it if you plan on staying in the prairies. Now is the time to get ahead and prepare yourself for what's to come. Snow and bone-chilling temperatures. It's nothing, Manitobans aren't used to, but CAA Manitoba wants to make sure you're ready.
Nadia Matos with CAA says now is the time to get your winter tires on. While they aren't mandatory, Matos says they come with many benefits.
"We recommend installing a set of four, matching winter tires to give you the most traction and stability possible when you're dealing with the snow, ice, slush, cold, and even bare roads," said Matos. "Winter tires are designed to handle all of those scenarios. They can help to reduce your braking distance by up to 25 percent or two car lengths."
Getting your emergency car kit in order is important. These items could help you when you least expect it. Items could include flares, jumper cables, and matches.
"You also want to think about things that will keep you warm. Throw an extra blanket in your trunk, some mitts, and soft things," continued Matos. "Non-perishable food items and some water. Make sure your phone is charged and have a charger."
You should also check your car battery. An average car battery lasts three to five years. Even a fully charged battery can lose up to 30 percent of its charge in temperatures below zero. CAA Manitoba will test members' batteries free of cost during a service call.
Check your brakes. If you notice any squealing or grinding, it may be time to have them serviced. Check your block heater and ensure you have appropriate winter tools, such as an ice scraper, a small shovel, and a snow brush, handy in your car at all times.
Matos can't stress enough how important it is to make sure you have full visibility in the winter months.
"Check your windshield wipers to make sure they're not cracked. The recommendation to change your wipers is every six months," ended Matos. "Make sure your lighting system is fully on and in good working order. Have some extra windshield wiper fluid in your trunk. Make sure you take the extra time to remove the snow from the top of your vehicle and windshield."
Drive safely this winter and stay safe.
