Tariffs, particularly by China on Canadian Canola, was a major topic when the country's agriculture ministers held their annual conference in Winnipeg last week.
Manioba Agriculture minister and Dauphin MLA Ron Kostyshyn says there was a consensus from all of the ministers at the meeting that they all need to work together to move towards making Canada less reliant on exporting its products.
"I think the reality when we talk about tariffs, is the sooner we get ourselves manufacturing our own raw product, then we will become less reliant on other countries to buy our raw product. We can talk about Canola. Is there an appetite to go to bio-diesel opportunities, or is there an opportunity where aviation fuel has been discussed."
Kostyshyn adds though it is also important to settle issues with China, and to have Canadian canola flowing freely to that market once again.
