Andrew Coombs has been the band teacher at the DRCSS for 12 years.
He's also the leader of the community jazz band. During his time at the high school in Dauphin, Andrew has seen many talented musicians. From those entering high school to the seasoned veterans in grade 12, Andrew has taken great pride in leading the musical force.
"You know from students who have gone on to study music at Brandon University. I've had a student who is now a successful music composer," said Coombs. "To now people who live in Dauphin, work community jobs, and take part in the community band."
The DRCSS held two winter concerts last week. On Tuesday, it was in the school's gym. Then on Thursday, they transitioned to the multi-purpose room. Both, as Andrew says, were incredible.
"We had a full gym on Tuesday for our concert band concert," continued Coombs. "On Thursday, we had a full multi-purpose room for the jazz and choir concert. So many community members came out to support our music program, which was wonderful."
Coombs is now looking forward to showtime on Tuesday. There will be a community band and a community Christmas concert at the Watson Art Centre at 7:00 p.m. There is no cost to watch the concert; however, there will be a silver collection at the door.
This will be the third time that the DRCSS has held this event at the Watson.
"It's obviously a very nice venue to perform in and to watch music in," added Coombs. "It's nice to have the proper stage and atmosphere that is created in the Watson. We're looking forward to our third annual Christmas concert at the Watson."
Last year, a sold-out crowd packed the Watson. On Tuesday, you can join in on the fun. And if you do, you're in for a Christmas treat.
"If you like Christmas music, it'll be great for you. If you like upbeat, classic, and contemporary jazz music, this is for you," ended Coombs. "There will also be some fun concert band pieces. We will have something for everyone in attendance."
