A 73-year-old Dauphin woman is facing a costly lesson after being caught flying down the highway near Portage la Prairie.

RCMP say the driver was clocked on Wednesday at 163 kilometres an hour in a 100 zone near Road 42 West. Police say it took nearly five kilometres to catch up before pulling her over.

The woman allegedly told officers she never noticed the lights and sirens — and didn’t realize how fast she was going.

She now faces $1,547 in fines and could also lose her licence following a Highway Traffic Act review.
