If you're at the Dauphin Public Library over the next few weeks, you can expect a little bit of dust and noise. Included in this year's city budget was money for the library to get a new roof, and that construction has started.
Alison Moss, Director of the Parkland Regional Library, said the construction is going well, and on-schedule. Though there might be some changes to service during the construction, Moss hopes the library won't have to close, but that will depend on the noise.
"We're expecting a few weeks, and May was out target month, mid May, we were just waiting for mother nature to cooperate...I do expect some interruptions to service over the next few weeks, but we'll just take that as it comes, and we hope not to have to close, but it'll just depend on what the noise levels are," said Moss.
The fact that money for roof repairs was included in the city's budget this year is a good spark of hope for the library. Moss said over the years, the library has constantly evolved and changed, and this investment in the building will help them continue to provide service to the Parkland.
In the years the library has existed, it started off as a shelf in a store, then kept growing and changing until it became the library we know today. Moss said she has some accounts of how the old library was, one dating as far back at 1926.
"I've always felt strong support from the City of Dauphin and the RM of Dauphin around maintaining and really promoting library service in the City of Dauphin...[in the account], they start talking about their personal library experience in Dauphin in 1926. So, that's 100 years or more of library service in Dauphin," said Moss.
Moss said she expects the construction to only last a couple weeks, but could be longer depending on the weather and other factors. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.
