McKay Wanted By Dauphin RCMP

The Dauphin RCMP are looking for 32-year-old Adam McKay from the Valley River First Nation.

On Friday, officers spotted McKay resting his face on the steering wheel on Railway Avenue North in Grandview. When the officer asked McKay to get out, he refused.

The officer opened the door, where a struggle ensued. With the door still open, McKay fled, and the officer did not pursue him due to a risk to public safety.

McKay is known to frequent Grandview and Dauphin. He usually drives a white Chevrolet Silverado with black markings. If you know where he is, call the Dauphin RCMP at 622-5020.

A by-election has been scheduled for December 2nd to fill a vacancy on the Mountain View School Division board of trustees.

The seat that is open is in the City of Dauphin, and is due to the death earlier this year of John Taylor.

Nomination packages can be picked up starting today (Wednesday) at the school board office.

They must be signed by a minimum of 25 eligible voters in the city, and can be turned back in to the school board office between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm on either October 21, 22, 23, 24, or 27.

The by-election will occur if more than one candidate files papers.

The construction is almost complete, and the staff at Dr Brenna and Three Graces Medi Spa expect to move into their new, expanded location by mid-November.

At six thousand square feet, the building will be five times larger than their current location.

It will also sport a new name - Arc Skin Laser Veins.

Owner Dr. Brenna Haverluck says they will still offer the same services in the new building.

"Right now, we are just expanding our foot care services. Eventually, we might invest in some new equipment, but at this point just foot care. And with that, some additional reception and the staff needed to help us run our current services."

Haverluck says gift cards and reward cards from Three Graces will still be accepted at the new location, which will be located near the Medical clinic and hospital.

The Manitoba Arts Network is bringing live music and interactive workshops to 10 First Nations schools in the province, including one here in the Parkland.

The Indigenous Voices on Tour program began earlier this month in Grand Rapids and will make a stop in Sandy Bay on October 24th.

Led by Kennie Henderson of the band Low Budget Rockstar, it is designed to inspire youth through performance, mentorship, and storytelling.

Three Parkland-area men - including two under the age of 18 - face aggravated assault charges following an incident earlier this month near the Wuskwi Sipikh First Nation near Birch River.

RCMP Major Crimes were called in to investigate the incident, which took place early on the morning of October 2nd.

A 53-year-old man was transported to a hospital in Winnipeg in critical condition.

A 16-year-old boy from Dauphin turned himself into Swan River RCMP the following day, while 18-year-old Zakari Kematch and a 14-year-old boy, both of Swan River, were arrested on October 9th.

The two men from Swan River remain in custody, while the Dauphin teen was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

The Dauphin and District Handivan has been around for 40 years.

Going stronger than ever, they now have four vans equipped with ramps and one ambulatory-style van. For a very small fee, drivers pick up those with mobility issues and disabilities to get done everyday things.

From grocery shopping to going to the mall and everything in between, the Dauphin & District Handivan has served Dauphin and the area for four decades.

Marge Beyette is the president and board chair.

"Looking back at the beginning, it's inspiring to see how far we have come," said Beyette. "We started with one driver and one vehicle. Now, we've grown into a trusted, community-supported service that continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients every day. We continue to grow as an organization, and we are evolving to meet the challenges we face."

To ring in 40 years, Marge and the wonderful crew at Dauphin and District Handivan will host a 40th Anniversary celebration on Saturday at the Royal Canadian Legion club room.

There will be a short program at 2:00 p.m., and community members are invited to join for cake and coffee.

Beyette believes it's very important to continue with this critical service. Over the last four decades, Beyette has been on hand to witness many of these changes.

"The sizing of the wheelchairs, the units that we've had to purchase to accommodate the different wheelchairs," ended Beyette. "The costs involved. Fuel, repairs, and the price of vehicles have all gone up. Those are the biggest changes."

The Dauphin and District Handivan runs Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It's $10 per stop, and they can also accommodate trips out of Dauphin for a fee. If you require their services, call 204-638-8444.

Fusion Credit Union will wrap up its fifth Community Infusion campaign next week with its Final Five Live Event.

What began in the spring with the launch of the application process has been whittled down to five entrepreneurs.

They will make live presentations of their projects to a panel of judges on October 21st at the Hamiota Community Centre, beginning at 6 pm.

Thirty thousand dollars will be divided that evening among the five finalists.

Something nerw this year will see the crowd in attendance also get to vote for their favourite among the five finalists, with the group receiving the most votes receiving $1,000.

Although final numbers will not be known for some time, organizers of this year's Culture Days in Dauphin say it'll be one for the record books.

This year saw more events, with more people participating in those activities.

It also saw the introduction of some new activities, such as Forest Fringe, Celebration of Cultures, and Bike Jam.

Spokesperson Jean-Louis Guillas says the new activities were received extremely well.

"Every year we try to bring new people along. The Celebration of Cultures brought so many more people who maybe within their circle of community were known for their talents, but this provided a larger platform and the community got to see."

Guillas hopes Culture Days spurs more creative expression within Dauphin throughout the year.

A Swan River man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the January 2024 stabbing death of a man on Main Street has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

According to a report by the CBC, Dean Bell, who is now 31 years old, fatally stabbed 33 year old Calvin Chartrand when they ran into each other near the EMS building in Swan River.

Court was told that Bell stabbed Chartrand twice during the scuffle - once in the face and once in the buttocks,.

Chartrand died of internal bleeding from the second stab wound.

Bell's co-accused, 41-year-old Tyrone Guiboche, was recently arrested on an outstanding warrant for the manslaughter charge, as well as a charge for failing to attend court.

It's a weekend-long event that will welcome many youth from around the province to Dauphin.

Embracing Change is the theme as the Dauphin Friendship Centre's Youth Council gets set to host a youth wellness gathering this weekend at the DFC in Dauphin.

There will be cultural activities, games, and it's an opportunity to learn and make new friends.

There will be prizes, and it will run from Friday night until Sunday. It's open to those aged 13 to 29.

Carrie Lang is the youth coordinator at the Dauphin Friendship Centre.

"We're thrilled to be able to host something like this," said Lang. "We have a newly formed youth council that has done a fantastic job in planning this in its entirety. It's an exciting new thing. From this, we hope to gain some new youths and their wonderful ideas."

The Dauphin Friendship Centre's Youth Council currently has six members. Maddie Amyotte leads the group, and members are between the ages of 13 and 20.

The group welcomes community members between the ages of 13 and 29 with ideas for events that could be held or different activities.
