Changes to the interest-free amount eligible for Canola farmers under the Cash Advance Program have now gone into effect.

Dave Gallant is Vice President of Finance with the Canadian Canola Growers Association, and says the changes were first announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this month, in light of the Chinese tariff situation. 

"Prior to September 16th, farmers had the opportunity to get up to $250,000, interest-frree, on all commodities that they took their advance on.  As of September 16th, farmers that have Canola on their advance are eligible to receive up to an additional $250,000, interest-free, for their Canola only."

Gallant adds that farmers who have already received a cash advance this year through the CCGA have already had their accounts adjusted to reflect the changes. 

Farmers that apply for cash advances as of today will have the new rules applied to their application.

It was a scary scene in Swan River on Friday afternoon.

At about 4:30 p.m., Swan River RCMP responded to a collision in the parking lot of 1300 Main Street. An SUV, driven by an adult male, veered off the road and collided head-on with a street post. The vehicle also struck another vehicle.

The driver of the SUV was in medical distress when the incident happened and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. There was no one in the other vehicle.

Local card collectors that have to travel to places like Winnipeg and Saskatoon for card shows will soon have an opportunity to buy, sell, or trade closer to home. 

The Dauphin Marketplace Mall is hosting its first ever card show and sale on October 4th from 10-3 in the former Sydor Farm and Garden location.  

Organizer James Blake says there will be a little bit of everything at this show. 

"There is going to be a lot of hockey cards, but there is also going to be baseball, baskeball, football, as well as non-sports cards. I know that myself, I have a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh and some odd stuff like  the old Harry Potter trading card game from about 20 years ago. So even if you want to be a vendor but you are not going to have any NHL caards,  but will have magic or Pokemon cards, you are more than welcome."

There are now 12 Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation offices across the province, following the official opening of two new branches on Friday.

Dauphin MLA and Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn was on hand for the ceremonies in both Virden and Shoal Lake. 

Each office will be staffed by four full-time employees and a team of insurance adjusters, and are expected to serve 650 to 700 farmers and agri-businesses in the surrounding regions. 

They will improve access to MASC programs and services, providing more convenient, in-person support for crop insurance, lending, and other key resources.

A news release from the province states MASC plays a vital role in supporting the province’s agriculture sector through risk management, financing, and advisory services.

West Region Tribal Council will be holding another I.D. Clinic later this week.

It's set to take place on Wednesday, from 9am to 4pm, across from the Dauphin Co-op Food Store.

The free event is for anyone looking to obtain proper government identification, such as birth certificates, status cards, and health cards.

Service Canada and Revenue Revenue will also be on hand to help with areas like S.I.N. requests, C.P.P., Child Tax Benefits, and G.S.T. rebates.

Pederson Photographic will also be on site, between 10 and 3 on Wednesday, to do passport photos.

The new Western Manitoba Women's Centre opened this past week in Brandon.

And included in the grand opening ceremony was an announcement of a $100,000 commitment from the provincial government. 

The money, which comes from the province's From The Ground Up - Safe Healthy Communities for All protgram, will help add programming and increase capacity at the facility.

The new building, located on Rosser Avenue in Brandon, provides a safe space for women, gender-diverse people, and their children.

Around 128 Family medicine residents from the University of Manitoba will be in Brandon this weekend for the fourth annual Family Medicine Resident Retreat.

Hosted by Prairie Mountain Health, the event provides  education, networking, social activities and learning more about potential employment opportunities. 

One of the highlights is tonight's  job fair, where Regional Health Authorities, medical clinics, community recruitment committees, and other support businesses throughout the province are able to showcase employment and lifestyle opportunities.

The weekend also includes group/ family activities, as well as a Saturday night dinner. 

The theme for this year's retreat is Rural Medicine - Endless Horizons.

Main Street North, beginning at 5th Avenue North, will come alive tonight with the kick off event for Dauphin Culture Days.
Culture Days spokesperson Jean-Louis Guillas explains how the Meet the Makers Under the Stars outdoor event works. 
"Makers - who do all kinds of crafts - are going to have an outdoor market on Main Street.  We have had it for the last couple of years and it is a great kickoff because it is a lot of different people.  Where you an have a chance to visit with them and learn about the items they make, the culture and their craft.  So that is one event that has a lot of people, and it is a lot of fun because it is an outdoor event."
Around 20 different makers are expected to take part, while Johnny Pacey will provide entertainment throughout the evening.
The event runs from 4 to 9 pm.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service has launched the use of body-worn cameras at a detachment in northern Manitoba, marking the first MFNPS detachment to introduce the technology.

Body-worn cameras have been deployed at the Opaskwayak Cree Nation detachment near the Pas.

The First Nations police service said plans are in place to expand the initiative to all other detachments in the coming months. 

The police service added that training surrounding the technology has already been provided to officers.

The community of Langruth is ready to throw down on Saturday.

The Langruth Harvest Festival has something for everyone at the sports grounds and runs from morning until night.

Michelle Teichroeb is with the organizing committee planning the 10th Annual event.

"We are excited to have done this for 10 years," said Teichroeb. "We're looking forward to celebrating and adding a few new events to our day."

Michelle says what makes this event so special is bringing the community together. Adults and children alike have come out in the hundreds over the years to enjoy the day and make lifelong memories.

"We have a hay bale structure for climbing, some bouncy castles," said Teichroeb. "We'll have pony rides, a hay ride, and various other games throughout the grounds."

There will also be a graffiti car station and face painting. Add in a raffle with great prizes and a slo-pitch tournament, and the Langruth Harvest Festival has something for everyone. After a full day of fun and games, the event will end with a bang.

Fireworks start at about 9:00 p.m.

"Open to all ages, and we're hoping as many as possible come," ended Teichroeb. "There is no admission fee. We do have a donation box so people can contribute what they can."

Dauphin's Curbside Giveaway is back. How it works is simple. Put any unwanted items you don't want on your curb, and if residents like what you have to offer, you'll never have to worry about storing those unwanted items again.

The annual event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, says Christian Laughland.

"The curbside giveaway is always popular throughout the community," said Laughland. "I remember sitting in my house and just watching people driving back and forth. It's kind of the fall version of what we've started in the spring with the garage and yard sales in the early spring. It's a great opportunity for people to give their unwanted items a new home."

Laughland does urge caution for those driving and walking around. 

Keep in mind, if you have items on your curb that aren't claimed by Sunday evening, you must remove them. If not, you can face fines.

"Make sure you take all your items back in at the end of Sunday," ended Laughland. "If you don't, they will be removed by the City of Dauphin and disposed of. The fee will be a minimum $50. Bring your stuff in and have some fun. Good luck to all those people going out treasure hunting."
